Eight Quick Typography Tools

July 12, 2013

Still organizing my bookmarks and sharing some of my various design tools. I like having a small arsenal of quick builders to save time, since I do 95% of my work in Notepad++. To be fair, half of these are filler text generators, but I seem to have a need for those quite often. So here is my small list of typography tools to help speed up web development.

Webfont generator

Font Squirrel Webfont Generator

One of the better webfont generators. They also have a nice selection of free, pre-built webfont kits.

Google Fonts

Google Fonts

In terms of raw speed, Google Fonts provides a pretty solid selection of free fonts to use in design. I assume most designers are aware of Google Fonts and all the various pros and cons, but its worth including in my list since I do use them often, particularly if I am in a hurry and can’t afford to spend a lot of time on setting up fonts for a project.

csstxt

CSStxt

CSStxt builds basic CSS text formatting. I don’t use this much anymore but it is a quick way to preview word spacing, etc.

Lorem Ipsum

Lorem Ipsum

Basic Lorem Ipsum generator. This is completely to the point and can kick out filler text by paragraph, word or byte length, and also does lists.

Riker Ipsum

Riker Ipsum

A slightly more interesting Lorem Ipsum generator, using quotes from Commander Riker from Star Trek TNG.

Picksum Ipsum

Picksum Ipsum

An even more dynamic selection of alternate Lorem Ipsum, using quotes from Clint Eastwood, Michael Caine and others.

Slipsum

Slipsum

And here it is, the Samuel L. Jackson Lorem Ipsum generator. What else is there to say?

CSS3 Text Shadow Generator

CSS3 Text Shadow Generator

They have other useful CSS generators as well, but this gives you a quick way to preview your text shadow while you build you code.
