R.I.P. Saguaro 🌵

The saguaro cactus in my view

I feel like, in the grand totality of what’s happened over the last few years that a saguaro cactus dying isn’t the worst thing, but over the weekend this thing fell over. It’s a big deal and it makes me sad!

That cactus was huge, which means it was probably very old. Judging from photos I have that illustrate scale, I’d calculate it having been upwards of 50′ tall. It was probably contemporary to Billy the Kid and Wyatt Earp.

I probably should have given this saguaro a name, it had a huge impact on my day to day life. My skyline isn’t the same without it.

At some point over the last year, the cactus lost a few arms, which was foreboding in and of itself. It’s been dry, really dry. We had virtually no monsoon in 2019 and 2020 and very little rain. Apparently, saguaro have been suffering across the state. Coming off all the death and horror of 2020, this is just awful for me. I have taken a lot of photos and videos and that saguaro always makes a presence for itself.
